Surgery Day Do’s and Don’ts

Written by Dr. Sean Maguire on February 9, 2016

When the day of surgery finally arrives, it is natural to feel a flood of emotions: hope, excitement… maybe even a little nervousness. One thing that Dr. Sean Maguire of Physician’s Center for Beauty does not want you to feel is unprepared. To help get you ready for the big day, he shares some do’s and don’ts for your day of surgery.

If you have questions about any of these items or any additional instructions Dr. Maguire or our team has given you, please don’t hesitate to call our office.

Do: Eat light the day before surgery. Avoid foods that are spicy, salty or calorie heavy. Aim for lean meats, fruits and vegetables, and whole grains.

Don’t: Eat or drink after midnight the day of your surgery.

Don’t: Apply deodorant, makeup, perfume, lotion, creams or hairspray.

Do: Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothing that you can slip in and out of easily. Your top should button or zip up in the front. Wear flats or tennis shoes.

Don’t: Wear tight clothing, high heels, pantyhose or jewelry.

Do: Remove any body piercings.

Don’t: Wear dark-colored fingernail polish. Light polish, shellac and artificial nails are fine. Toenail polish is OK.

Do: Double-check your check-in time and directions to Premier Surgery Center

Don’t: Drive yourself to the surgery center. Arrange for a companion to drive you to the facility and have them communicate with the staff about when to pick you up.

Do: Wear your glasses if you need them.

Don’t: Wear contacts.

Do: Pack your ID card, insurance information and eyeglasses case.

Don’t: Bring anything else that could be misplaced while you are in surgery.

Do: Make any last-minute preparations to your recovery space so you will be comfortable when you return home.

Don’t: Wait until the last minute to fill prescriptions, grocery shop or pick up other recovery essentials.

Do: Pack the car with some blankets and pillows to make the ride home more comfortable. Throw a package of crackers in the car, too; eating something plain can help stave off any post-operative nausea.

Don’t: Hesitate to call us if you have any questions about your surgery. We are always available to speak with you, answer questions and clear up confusion. You can reach Dr. Maguire and the rest of our team by calling (502) 897-7546.
