Meet Dr. Sean Maguire
Dr. Sean Maguire is an award-winning plastic surgeon who grew up in the Southwest. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis and the University of Louisville School of Medicine, graduating magna cum laude from the latter. Dr. Maguire completed his residency training in otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Louisville and his residency training in plastic, reconstructive and hand surgery at the University of Cincinnati. After earning his certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery, he completed a fellowship training program in aesthetic and laser surgery in Hawaii. In addition to Dr. Maguire’s private practice, he is a published author and serves on the advisory board for Suneva Medical. He also belongs to the national speaker’s panel for SkinMedica.
Meet Dr. Larry Florman
Dr. Larry Florman brings several decades of rhinoplasty experience to The Kentuckiana Center for Rhinoplasty. Having graduated medical school at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, he trained in head and neck surgery at the prestigious Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital. He went on to complete a fellowship in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Louisville. Dr. Florman is board certified in both otolaryngology-head and neck surgery as well as plastic surgery. In addition to maintaining a busy private practice, Dr. Florman has been active in academic and research activities as a faculty member in the University of Louisville’s Department of Surgery. Over the years, Dr. Florman has performed over 4,000 rhinoplasty procedures for both cosmetic and functional concerns. He maintains a patient-focused approach to cosmetic surgery and believes that patient safety comes first.

What Does Rhinoplasty Correct?

What Are the Most Common Rhinoplasty Techniques?
Dr. Maguire and Dr. Florman are well versed in the two main approaches to nose surgery: the open and closed techniques. With the open approach to rhinoplasty, the plastic surgeons place the incision on the columella, the thin strip of skin separating the nostrils. This gives them better visibility and thus more control during surgery, but generally requires a longer recovery period and may leave a small scar.
With the closed technique, the rhinoplasty surgeons place the incision on the interior of the nostrils. This approach does not leave any visible scars and may allow for a quicker recovery period, but the plastic surgeons have less visibility during the operation.
What Happens During Rhinoplasty?
Nose surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, under general anesthesia.
The details of the procedure vary by patient, largely depending on the patient’s surgical goals. For instance, Dr. Maguire or Dr. Florman might remove skin, tissue, cartilage and / or bone to reduce the size of the nose, or they might use cartilage grafting techniques to enhance the size of the nose or address asymmetry. To improve the function of the nose, they might re-shape the underlying nasal structure. Before the day of surgery, the plastic surgeons collaborate with each patient to formulate an appropriate treatment plan based on his or her unique anatomical needs and aesthetic concerns.
What Is the Rhinoplasty Recovery Period Like?
Following nose surgery, patients should expect to take about one week off of work or their usual routine, during which they should rest as much as possible.
For the first few days after surgery, patients should keep their head elevated at all times, even while sleeping. They may feel as though they have a “stuffy” nose and should breathe through their mouth to compensate for this. The treatment area might be swollen or bruised, and bruising might extend into the eye area. Patients should not be alarmed by the look of “black eyes”; this will resolve over time. Using saline nasal spray will help keep the inside of the nose moisturized and clean. Taking oral pain relievers as directed by Dr. Maguire and Dr. Florman, helps relieve any discomfort.
A nasal splint will be in place after surgery to provide added support to the nasal structure during the initial healing process. Patients should keep these in place until the plastic surgeons instruct them otherwise.
Some of the results of rhinoplasty become visible as the initial swelling resolves, but the final aesthetic benefits of the procedure can take up to a year to become fully apparent; this is how long it takes for all residual swelling to resolve.

Open nose surgery requires an incision in the bottom of the nose and could be the best option for certain patients and nose alterations. Open rhinoplasty may leave a visible scar that fades with time and proper care.
When Will My Breathing Improve after Nose Surgery for Breathing Problems?
Nose surgery to improve breathing problems is called a septoplasty. After your procedure, your nose may be packed with gauze or cotton to promote clotting and absorb blood. If nasal packing is required, it’s typically removed one to two days after your rhinoplasty. You may experience stuffiness from post-surgical swelling and drainage, but these will subside significantly over the first week. While full recovery and nasal clearness can take several months, you should notice improved breathing in the second week of septoplasty recovery.
Will Insurance Cover My Rhinoplasty Procedure?
Your insurance provider may cover a rhinoplasty, or septoplasty, performed for medical reasons to increase breathing function. Septoplasty (even combined with cosmetic rhinoplasty) may be considered a reconstructive procedure.
