What Does the Procedure Entail?
Revision breast augmentation is a fairly common procedure, but each case is different. Revision or secondary breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia. The location of the incision depends on the initial procedure and type of breast surgery planned, as some women combine revision breast augmentation with breast lift. The inframammary incision is made under the breast in the inframammary fold or breast crease, whereas the periareolar technique limits the incisions around the areolas. A breast lift incision could be necessary. That might be a vertical lollipop incision (around the areolas and down to the crease) or a Wise pattern incision (around the areolas and down and across the breast crease). Some incisions will be visible with the breast lift technique but are concealed under bras and swimwear.
Dr. Maguire accesses the breast tissues and makes the necessary changes, removing and replacing breast implants and reshaping the breast tissue. He will close the incisions with many layers of dissolving sutures to minimize scars.
What Is the Recovery Like?
The recovery process for revision breast augmentation is similar to the recovery from your initial surgery. You will have light bandages on your incisions and will be wearing a supportive compression garment. Dr. Maguire will provide instructions on how to care for the surgical site, and you will be prescribed medication to minimize pain and nausea. You will have a follow-up appointment scheduled in advance.
You may notice positive changes in your breasts right after surgery but most of your results are obscured by post-operative swelling and bruising for several weeks. It may take six weeks or longer for all the swelling to resolve and for your breasts to soften to a more natural look and feel. Full recovery takes six to 12 months, and incision lines will fade significantly in the first year.
