Do I Need a Breast Implant Exchange?

Written by Dr. Sean Maguire on May 7, 2017

Breast Implant Exchange

Modern breast implants are stronger than ever before and designed to last for many years. However, there are a few instances in which breast implants should be removed and/or replaced. In this blog post, Louisville plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Maguire of Physician’s Center for Beauty discusses when breast implant exchange is appropriate.

Breast Implant Complications

Research shows that both saline and silicone implants are extremely safe and durable. However, the outer shell of an implant can break down over time, increasing the risk of a leak or rupture.

When a saline implant leaks or ruptures, the saline filling solution is absorbed safely and naturally by the body. The rupture/leak is obvious as the implant becomes noticeably deflated. If a silicone implant ruptures or leaks, the filling will stay in or around the breast pocket and the breast will retain its shape. Because of this, silicone implant ruptures and leaks can generally only be detected via medical imaging. Women with silicone implants are advised to have regular MRIs or mammograms to check for ruptures and leaks in their implants.

Cosmetic Concerns

Although many women are very happy with their breast implants, there are some who wish to exchange their implants for another size. Whether the patient desires a smaller or larger breast size, implants can be safely replaced with ones that the patient feels comfortable and satisfied with. Other patients may decide that they want to exchange their saline implants with silicone ones. Or, they may want another breast implant shape (e.g., round or teardrop). If you are no longer happy with your breast implants, Dr. Maguire can work with you to determine the implant size and type in order to achieve your desired look.

In some cases, patients may decide they no longer want breast implants but may desire a breast lift. Dr. Maguire can remove the implants and reshape the breasts for a perkier, more youthful appearance.
