Is liposuction good for cellulite?

Liposuction is one of the most commonly performed procedures done by plastic surgery practices around the world, including Dr. Sean Maguire’s practice. As such, there are many questions surrounding the procedure, including whether it is an appropriate treatment for cellulite. Dr. Maguire explains the answer to potential Louisville liposuction patients in this blog post.

About Liposuction

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that eliminates small, unwanted areas of fat on the body that are resistant to diet and exercise. During the procedure, Dr. Maguire will make several strategically placed incisions near the areas with the most fat. Dr. Maguire will then use a small cannula to break up the fat and loosen the fat cells for easy removal. Liposuction can be used on various body areas including the legs, thighs, hips, love handles, abdomen, back, upper arms and neck.

On the surface, cellulite appears as dimpled skin, resembling the appearance of cottage cheese. Below the surface, cellulite is a cellular breakdown that causes damage to the skin’s connective tissue. Because cellulite is not fat, it cannot be properly treated with liposuction, a fat removal procedure. In fact, liposuction can actually worsen the appearance of cellulite in some patients. If you do not have unwanted fat but rather wish to improve the appearance of cellulite, Dr. Maguire may advise against liposuction.

Solutions for Cellulite

While liposuction cannot treat cellulite, body wrap treatments can help improve the appearance of the skin and, as a result, of cellulite. Body wraps are designed to exfoliate, cleanse and soften the skin. The nourishing properties used in body wraps tighten skin, reducing the appearance of cellulite. At Physician’s Center for Beauty, Dr. Maguire offers Phytomer Essential Sculpting, a soothing and effective seaweed wrap treatment that has helped hundreds of patients achieve softer, tighter skin all while minimizing the appearance of cellulite. The treatment can be used on the abdomen, waist, hips, thighs and legs.
