Liposuction Myths vs. Facts

Written by Dr. Sean Maguire on January 5, 2016

There is so much information about liposuction floating around on the Internet and, unfortunately, not all of it is true. For example, Dr. Sean Maguire of the Physician’s Center for Beauty has noticed quite a few mistruths circulating about liposuction. In this post, he clears up the most common myths about liposuction body contouring and sets the record straight.

Myth: Liposuction is a weight loss tool.

Fact: No qualified plastic surgeon would recommend liposuction as a safe way to lose weight. Liposuction is meant to refine specific areas of the body when diet and exercise have failed to produce results. Suitable candidates for liposuction should be at or close to their target weight and should be committed to maintaining their weight after surgery.

Myth: Liposuction treats cellulite.

Fact: Cellulite is complex and cannot be treated with liposuction. In fact, in some cases liposuction may actually make cellulite worse. In addition to removing the pockets of fat, effective cellulite treatment must loosen the fibrous collagen bands that pull on the skin, giving it a dimpled appearance. Liposuction cannot accomplish this.

Myth: Fat can grow back after liposuction.

Fact: Once fat cells have been removed, they do not grow back. The treated areas of the body do not fill out the way they used to. The remaining fat cells in other areas of the body can expand to compensate. The best way to maintain liposuction results is to follow healthy lifestyle habits like exercising regularly, eating healthfully and practicing portion control.

Myth: The only way to remove fat is through surgery.

Fact: Modern advances in cosmetic medicine have led to the development of non-surgical methods of fat removal. Two of the best examples are CoolSculpting Elite and SculpSure (both are available with Dr. Maguire). During CoolSculpting Elite, the unwanted fat cells are subjected to freezing temperatures, which causes them to die. SculpSure uses laser energy to melt excess fat cells. In both scenarios, the destroyed fat cells are naturally filtered from the body, leaving the treated area looking slimmer and more attractive.
