How Often Can You Get Botox?

Written by Dr. Sean Maguire on August 13, 2016

Botox is the most popular way to fight stubborn dynamic wrinkles — i.e., wrinkles that form from regularly making certain facial expressions like frowning and squinting. Using Botox, Dr. Sean Maguire and his team at Physician’s Center for Beauty can create a more youthful and relaxed appearance. There is no denying that the youthful effects of Botox are great — but they are temporary, and repeat treatment is needed to maintain results. A question that commonly comes up among Botox patients is, “How frequently should I schedule Botox treatments?” Here, Dr. Maguire explains the answer.

Typical Botox Results

The effects of Botox treatment typically last three to six months. Every patient’s body is unique and therefore responds to the product differently. Some patients have very strong or large facial muscles and the Botox wears off quickly; others have the opposite and can enjoy results for up to eight months. Gradually, as the body metabolizes the Botox, the relaxed muscles start to regain movement and make the facial expressions that lead to wrinkles.

Frequency of Treatments Is Up To You

How often you schedule Botox treatments is up to you and Dr. Maguire. You should be candid with him when explaining your aesthetic goals and needs, and he will provide his honest assessment of your area(s) of concern. You may opt to schedule appointments as soon as wrinkles start to reappear, or you may wait until the Botox has completely worn off.

Botox is safe, FDA-approved and can be used for many years without problems. There are stories of patients developing antibodies that render the injections less effective so that an immunity to Botox occurs. This is extremely rare and happens in a very small percentage of patients.

In fact, more commonly the opposite occurs and Botox becomes even more effective over time as the muscles that are temporarily paralyzed start to weaken. With regular injections, the muscles atrophy to an extent and as a result, your Botox results may last longer, so that you may go a bit longer in between appointments.
