Renew your skin for the fall

The summer is a great time for outdoor activities, like soaking up the sun while enjoying a ball game or spending some time at the pool. While exercising outside is great for the body, all that sun exposure can take its toll on your skin. In this blog post, Louisville plastic surgeon Dr. Sean Maguire shares tips on how to renew your skin for the fall.

Transitioning From Summer to Fall

As the weather cools and dries, your skin will need a little extra care to stay hydrated and healthy. Here are some tips to help you keep that summer glow as the days become shorter:

  • Swap out your lotions for creams. Moisture retention is the first step towards healthy skin in cool, dry weather. Creams equip your skin with a thicker barrier to help keep it hydrated longer.
  • Head into fall with a full-body exfoliation session. A gentle, oil-based exfoliator can wash away the dead skin cells that accumulate after spending time in chlorine, salt and sun.
  • Don’t ditch the sunscreen altogether. The air temperature may cool, but those UV rays can still find your face, even on overcast days. Use a moisturizer with built-in protection of SPF 15 or higher.
  • Pay attention to your skin’s shifting needs. What kept your skin hydrated all summer long isn’t a sure shot in the fall. Your skin type can go through mild or even dramatic changes throughout the year.

Consider a Chemical Peel

A season’s worth of soaking up the rays can leave you with sun damage, including hyperpigmentation. Lingering dark spots and redness can be addressed with a chemical peel. During this procedure, your skin is treated with an exfoliating agent that destroys the damaged areas, stimulating the growth of healthy, new skin. Since it’s best to stay out of the sun immediately after treatment, fall is a great time to undergo this procedure.

Other Skin Resurfacing Options

If you’d prefer to encourage skin regrowth with fewer chemicals, dermal needling could be the right treatment for you. In this procedure, fine-pointed needles produce micro-punctures on the outer layers of the skin to induce collagen production. This can smooth lines, reduce scarring and sun damage, and restore your skin’s natural elasticity.
