Tummy Tuck: Fact vs. Fiction

Written by Dr. Sean Maguire on June 15, 2015

There is a lot of information about tummy tuck surgery circulating the Internet, and not all of it is true. Dr. Sean Maguire of Physician’s Center for Beauty wants to set the record straight regarding this safe and effective body contouring procedure. In this blog post, he separates tummy tuck facts from fiction.

Tummy tuck scars are unsightly.

Fiction.

All surgical procedures will result in scarring, but a talented plastic surgeon like Dr. Maguire knows how to hide and minimize them. Tummy tuck incisions are typically placed very low on the abdomen (right above the pubic hairline) so scarring is concealed beneath a bikini or panty line.

Future pregnancy will reverse your surgical results.

Fact.

Gaining a little bit of weight after tummy tuck won’t compromise your results. However, pregnancy causes more substantial weight gain in addition to stretching the skin and separating the abdominal muscles. This combination of effects virtually negates the effects of tummy tuck surgery. For this reason, Dr. Maguire strongly recommends postponing tummy tuck until you are finished having children.

Tummy tucks are intended exclusively for women.

Fiction.

The majority of tummy tuck patients may be women, but men can enjoy the surgical outcomes, too! Many men that have experienced a dramatic fluctuation in weight — from bariatric surgery or natural methods — have leftover loose skin and fat deposits. Tummy tuck is perfect for eliminating excess skin and fat to give the abdomen a flatter, firmer and more masculine appearance. Plastic surgery statistics show an increase in the number of men seeking plastic surgery and realizing the benefits.

Tummy tuck can improve your posture.

Fact.

Weak abdominal muscles don’t provide the spine with adequate support for good posture. If you have weak abdominal muscles, you may slouch or bend over frequently. Repairing these muscles gives the spine the support it needs for better posture.

Liposuction is a good alternative to tummy tuck.

Fiction.

Liposuction is performed purely for fat reduction purposes. Unlike tummy tuck, it cannot remove excess skin or tighten the abdominal muscles. Liposuction can be incorporated into the tummy tuck operation to remove excess abdominal fat and contour the sides of the waist for a more beautiful result.

Tummy tuck will eliminate stretch marks.

Fact (with limitations).

In many cases, tummy tuck removes stretch marks below the navel. However, it will not remove stretch marks above the navel (it may move them down lower on the navel). This can be discussed in more detail during your tummy tuck consultation with Dr. Maguire.
