Why Winter Is the Perfect Time for Cosmetic Surgery

Written by Dr. Sean Maguire on February 26, 2015

At Physician’s Center for Beauty, some of our patients wonder what the best time of year to undergo cosmetic surgery is. Although any time is a great time to address aesthetic concerns that have long bothered you, winter is actually a very smart time of year to undergo the plastic surgery procedure of your choice. Here’s why.

Winter Clothing = Discretion

Some of our patients enjoy discussing how cosmetic surgery has helped them feel better about themselves. Others prefer to be discreet about their cosmetic procedures. If you can relate to the latter, you might want to consider undergoing your cosmetic surgery procedure during winter.

Undergoing cosmetic surgery during winter means you won’t look out of place wearing pants and thick sweaters, which can help conceal incision sites, compression garments and drainage tubes that might be present following surgery.

Less Sunlight = Good Scar Protection

Every surgical procedure requires an incision, which leads to a scar. Nonetheless, over time and with proper care, scars should increasingly fade until they closely match the color of the surrounding skin and are nearly imperceptible.

One of the most important aspects of proper scar care is keeping your incision site(s) out of the sun. Just 20 minutes of unprotected sun exposure on a scar, while it is still pink, can cause it to darken in color, and it may stay dark. By undergoing plastic surgery during winter it is less likely that scars will be exposed to the sun.

Ample Recovery Time = Bikini-Ready by Summer

You will notice some of the aesthetic benefits of cosmetic surgery immediately after your procedure. For instance, tummy tuck patients will notice a firmer, flatter abdominal profile, and breast augmentation patients will notice a shapelier bust line.

However, the final results of surgery take several weeks — sometimes a few months — to become apparent, as this is how long it takes for any residual swelling to resolve and for the body to heal completely. In addition, breast implants tend to sit high on the chest wall immediately after surgery, but settle into a more natural position over time.

By undergoing your cosmetic surgery procedure of choice during winter, you can rest assured that you will be ready to don a bathing suit and lounge by the pool by summer.
