Questions to Ask Yourself If You Are Considering Plastic Surgery

Plastic Surgery Questions & Answers

Undergoing plastic surgery is not a decision to take lightly. In fact, a healthy bit of introspection can serve you well as you consider plastic surgery. Dr. Sean Maguire of Physician’s Center for Beauty recommends asking yourself some key questions to make sure you are physically and mentally prepared for plastic surgery.

Are my expectations for surgery reasonable?

A good place to start is by asking yourself what you hope to achieve from surgery. Remind yourself that plastic surgery can improve (not perfect) the appearance of the treated area, but it is not a quick fix or a cure-all. Can you describe your specific, concrete goals of surgery during a consultation with a plastic surgeon?

What is my motivation for surgery?

Take a moment to ask yourself why you are pursuing surgery. Ideally, your decision should be based on your own thoughts and opinions. If someone else (e.g., a friend or significant other) is influencing you to have surgery, you might need to reevaluate your choices.

Have I done my homework about my procedure?

You should do your homework about your desired procedure in order to understand how it is performed as well as its risks, benefits and approximate costs. Being informed about your surgery will benefit you throughout the entire surgical process!

Can I commit to following my doctor’s pre-operative instructions?

Dr. Maguire will give you detailed instructions for preparing for surgery. These instructions may include eating healthy, exercising, not smoking and not using certain medicines or vitamins that can raise the surgical risks. Be honest with yourself about whether you can commit to complying with these instructions and increasing your chances of a safe surgery.

Do I understand the aftercare and recovery?

Depending on your procedure, you may need several days or a few weeks to recuperate. Dr. Maguire will ask you to restrict your activity level as you heal, and you may find your range of motion is limited. Think long and hard about whether you can make the necessary arrangements to take time off from work and coordinate childcare and pet care as you recover.
